My name is Joe Philogene and I go by Coach Phil. The game of basketball has been a passion of mine since the early ages of living in the Caribbean. Later on, my parents moved us to Montreal, CA where I finished high school. I went on to Dawson College where I kept on playing basketball, majoring in Sports Marketing and Management.
I then transferred to Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Where I focused on my marketing degree. While I was in school I worked for Adidas in SoHo, NYC. I then transferred to Miami with Adidas. Although fulfilling, I knew it was time to join the US Army. I enlisted and took on a job as a Military Intelligence Analyst.
While in the ARMY, I played and coached our battalion teams in the US and on our off time in Afghanistan. During my time in the ARMY coaching, I held a record of 27-3. This by far was the best coaching record. I always say this was one of my toughest coaching jobs because we were in a War Zone mostly and I was coaching my leadership. This taught me how to communicate with others in a way that I would not have imagined.
When my time came to leave the ARMY, my wife and I moved to Washington, DC. I continued to work in the intelligence field. Coaching started for me with coaching Team Attack U16, where we would hold a record of 25-5. After working with LCPS and coaching Team Attack I was hired in 2017 as the Head Coach at Middleburg Academy.
Middleburg Academy was a program that I was excited to take over as there were some excellent student-athletes. Within, the first year we started getting offers to players that held zero offers prior to us coming on board. Over the years at Middleburg Academy, every athlete that my coaching staff and I brought in went on to free school in terms of full athletic scholarships. Our student-athletes garnered over 100 scholarship offers, ranging from division 1, 2, and 3 (yes division 3, there are some that offer full rides, ask me which ones). My record at Middleburg Academy regular season was 49-22. Then when included the overall record during my time with the fall league, tournaments, and exhibitions my record is 78-22 (78% winning percentage).
I am married to Erin, and we have three children. My daughter who runs the house Viera is 5, my calm son is Eroe (pronounced Arrow) is 3, and our newborn son Bastien born in December 2020. I am currently working on my MBA at the University of Maryland and should graduate in the summer of 2021.
I look forward to working with you all!
